For three days, a group of Union College students helped a local designer and contractor renovate a room for a 17 year old girl with leukemia.

Sunday, Sherene Fedor got to see the final product and her new oasis that will give her a special place to rest and reflect.

Sherene was diagnosed with leukemia in January of 2010. For the last several years she has been undergoing treatment and as her family says they are taking it one day at a time.

Healing Spaces and their SLICE Team at Union College chose Sherene as a recipient for a room makeover.

Whatever Sherene wanted, Sherene got.

Sunday it was time for her to see her new room which Healing Spaces raised over $3,000 to renovate.

"It is very overwhelming that there are people out there willing to give their time and to help people that have been through such a tough time," said Sherene. Her mom, Missy, was just as surprised by the finished product, knowing her daughter needs the space to deal with some of the more difficult days that might be ahead.

"It is priceless," she said. "She does go through a lot with the drugs she has to be on plus the lack of sleep and irritability and struggling with a little depression now and then."

One of the youngest volunteers was 11 year old Danny Rossetti, Jr. who raised his own money to buy Sherene one of the things she really wanted, a leopard bed spread. Danny has a personal reason for helping out. Two years ago, he lost his sister Sophie to leukemia. "We are trying to give a little comfort to the kids because they go through a lot every day with their treatment," said Dan Rossetti, Sr. Sherene agrees saying, "There is a lot of not feeling well and doing what I wanted to and not being with friends. It was really hard."

Healing Spaces is a national program that aims to help children with cancer and other serious illnesses by creating a unique and comfortable environment in their own home.
